An essential skill for every FX artist. Bruising uses a number of techniques and products to give the effect of injury within the layers of the skin.

Bruising with Colorwash

We used Colorwash colours to create a two day old bruise.

Always start with clean, oil-free skin.

Step 1: Maraschino

Map out your broader areas of colour first. Dry and reapply for areas of extra strength.

Step 2: Indigo

Add darker blotches of colours, accenting deeper contours.

Step 3: Maroon

Maroon helps to 'brown' reds, making the bruise look a little older.

Step 4: Saffron

Add a touch of Saffron on the high-points. Blend into the Indigo where you want to diffuse tones.

Step 5: Gloss Sealer

Stipple a light coat of Gloss Sealer on the high points of the bruise to make it pop.

Step 6: Dried Matt Gel

A dab of blood to add a final touch!

Bruising with Bruiser Ink Palette

If you need to create bruises that apply with alcohol there's nothing quite like our Sideshow Bruiser Palette!

Many colours in our Bruiser palette use our transparent formulation, which means you get sheer colour but with maximum control (no thinned colour bleeding everywhere).

Step 1: Sideshow Bruiser Palette in Mulberry, Charcoal & Aubergine

Because we are creating an older bruise, we used Mulberry to map out the broader area, then Charcoal and Aubergine to give deeper details.

Step 2: Sideshow Bruiser Palette in Sarsaparilla & Lime

For the really aged bruise look we concentrated on stippling Lime and Sarsaparilla through the base-tones.

Step 3: Sideshow Bruiser Palette in Sherbet

A soft wash of Sherbet really brings it all together (but be careful not to use too much!)​​ No bright reds were used as the bruise is not fresh enough.

Step 4: Sideshow Bruiser Palette in Mulberry

Finally, stronger detailed scratches were done using more Mulberry.
